Two Sides research shows that this is untrue, in reality European forests were actually growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/Forest_Benefits_&amp;_Biodiversity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">58,390 sq. km daily<\/a> (or the size of 1,500 football pitches) between 2005 and 2020. This means that European forests currently span <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/Forest_Benefits_&amp;_Biodiversity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40% of European land<\/a> and increasing each year as forests are maintained and preserved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-679\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-679 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-681\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-681 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. High recycling rates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-683\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-683 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>Across the paper industry in Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/2-Paper-Production-and-Sustainable-Forests.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 49% of pulp used is made from recycled paper<\/a>. Schades are committed to our paper and label products using as much recycled material as possible, to keep our practices sustainable and minimise waste throughout our processes. Our Blue4est paper, used across our products, is a fully recyclable thermal paper. This means our customers don\u2019t have to worry about their paper usage impacting their environmental footprint.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-685\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-685 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Paper is renewable and biodegradable<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-687\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-687 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>Thanks to fewer amounts of pulp being used in paper products, paper is becoming increasingly renewable and biodegradable as microplastics are being restricted. Many of our products were BPA-free, even before EU regulations mandated its exclusion from paper products. At Schades we\u2019re at the forefront of technology, which sees us using cardboard, plastic and even coreless solutions across our range of products, helping us to maximise the recyclability of our paper rolls and labels and minimise the environmental impact wherever possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-689\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-689 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-691\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-691 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Leaders in renewable energy use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-693\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-693 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>The European paper industry has a much higher rate of renewable energy usage when compared to other major industries across the continent. Biomass is used across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/1-Renewable-Energy-and-Carbon-Footprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">61% of the industry<\/a>, as paper producer\u2019s source of onsite energy production, with gas being used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/1-Renewable-Energy-and-Carbon-Footprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33%<\/a> of the time.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-695\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-695 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-697\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-697 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Processing has low carbon intensity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-699\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-699 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>Paper production processes are also one of the lowest carbon intensity impacts of the industries in Europe. As an industry, we generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/1-Renewable-Energy-and-Carbon-Footprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">0.9% of emissions across Europe in 2021<\/a>. At our R+S site in Sarstedt, we use a solar energy system to further reduce our carbon footprint. This renewable energy system is vital in keeping our production process as efficient as possible, while maintaining our quality standards across our products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-701\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-701 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-703\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-703 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Efficient water usage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-705\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-705 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>Water usage within our industry has also been questioned, with a misconception that water is used in vast amounts and not recycled to preserve water stocks across Europe. In reality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/4-Paper's-Water-Footprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">93% of used water from the paper industry is returned to the environment<\/a> after thorough treatment to remove any harsh chemicals or toxins from the paper production process. On average, our industry uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/4-Paper's-Water-Footprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,700L of lake and river water per tonne<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-707\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-707 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-709\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-709 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Consumer misconceptions are declining<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-711\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-711 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>It is vital that our industry actively works to prevent industry-wide misconceptions being at the forefront of the public\u2019s mind. Through initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/twosides.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Two Sides<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecpaassociation.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Converted Paper Association<\/a> (ECPA), and accreditations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/fsc.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forest Stewardship Council<\/a> (FSC\u00ae) Schades and our colleagues within our industry can reassure our customers and the public that our processes are fully compliant with rigorous sustainability standards.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-713\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-713 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-715\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-715 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Recycling awareness is growing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-717\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-717 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>The European Paper Recycling Council, has recently announced that the paper value chain in Europe is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperforrecycling.eu\/press-release-european-recycling-rate-increased-to-72-in-2019-2-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on track to recycling 76% of its materials by 2030<\/a>, as pledged in 2021. With sustainable practices and initiatives being promoted by Schades, alongside paper industry organisations, the public\u2019s awareness of the industry\u2019s sustainable commitments is increasing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-719\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-719 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-721\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-721 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Importance of using \u2018virgin\u2019 fibres&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-723\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-723 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p>In the European paper industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/2-Paper-Production-and-Sustainable-Forests.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51% of pulp is virgin<\/a> (i.e. not from a recycled source) however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twosides.info\/documents\/factsheets\/2-Paper-Production-and-Sustainable-Forests.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90% of fibres used in Europe are from Europe<\/a>. Cepi have also confirmed that the European industry produced <a href=\"https:\/\/twosides.info\/uk\/cepi-key-statistics-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33.7 million tonnes of pulp in 2024<\/a>. Whilst the high percentage of virgin fibres are increasing the environmental impacts of paper production the reliance upon European fibres is drastically reducing the carbon footprint of the paper production process, when compared to countries where paper production fibres are imported.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-725\"\n\tclass=\"core-paragraph  block-725 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div><div \n\tid=\"block-727\"\n\tclass=\"core-heading  block-727 position-relative\"\n\tstyle=\"\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
