Linerless Labels: Paving the transition to sustainable business practices
Schades Group, 31 January 2025

Schades linerless labels are an alternative to traditional, self-adhesive labels and all-round solution to better your sustainable business practice.
They are a cost effective and versatile option for logistics and self-service activities.
In this product spotlight we look at what they are, how they help the environment and why they are the right option for your business.
What are linerless labels?
Linerless labels are created on rolls of continuous labels, which can be sized and finished according to the needs of your business.
Unlike traditional methods which use a backing (liner) for the label, linerless labels use cutting-edge technology to make this a thing of the past. This backing typically protects the adhesive on the back of the label. A linerless alternative uses silicone strips to ensure the labels stick to themselves, but not each other, when on the roll.
This removes the need for backing materials and increases the number of labels able to be printed on a single roll.
How do linerless labels help the environment?
Due to the lack of backing material needed for the rolls of labels, the only waste product is the inner cardboard core, this can be easily recycled. Linerless labels help reduce waste sent to landfills by up to 30%. The recyclable nature of these products also means the process is more sustainable than traditional self-adhesive labels.
Using linerless labels also requires fewer rolls to be used. Up to 40% more labels can be printed on each roll. Not only does this mean there are fewer materials needed to create the rolls, there’s also fewer rolls required to complete the task!
Thanks to the fewer rolls required per use, it also lowers the carbon footprint of the labels. Fewer rolls being used means transportation and delivery is easier and better for the environment.
Why are linerless labels the right choice for my business?
Using linerless labels generates a lower storage and transportation cost. Each task requires fewer rolls of labels, as each roll contains more labels than the average self-adhesive label roll. Fewer rolls can also be stored in a smaller space. This leaves more space for your business’ product in the warehouse.
Linerless labels also allow for a faster labelling process, there is no need to print, peel and stick, simply print and stick directly to the packaging/ item. The fewer rolls needed per task also means that downtime when changing rolls is not as frequent, this makes it a more efficient and convenient labelling process.
No waste also means your business won’t be subjected to risk of accidents. Where label backing waste may have once gathered in the workspace of your teams, with linerless labels this is no longer a risk or concern for possible accidents at work.
The larger print surface area allows more information to be provided to customers. Whether it’s parcel tracking information or making clear the price of their weighed fruit and vegetables in the supermarket, linerless labels offer the flexibility to show the amount of information you need for your customers.
What products are part of the Schades Group’s linerless labels range?
Schades offer a range of flexible self-service or logistics linerless labels.
The self-service labels we produce are best suited to self-service fruit and vegetable scales in supermarkets, where the price and barcode for the weighed products can easily be printed and used by customers.
Our logistics labels provide linerless solutions for tracking and shipping labels. This means that labelling parcels is more efficient as there is shorter down time between rolls of labels being used. The labels themselves can also be made to larger specifications to include the tracking information and barcodes needed for shipping, without sacrificing the number of labels on the roll.
