The benefits of cloud-based warehouse and logistics operations

Schades Group, 13 May 2025

  • Schades Group has deployed cloud-based operating systems across its warehouse operations in Europe.
  • Meeting the needs of internal and external stakeholders, the coordination of the company is streamlined.
  • The traceability of products within the Schades Group warehouses is futureproofing our internal and external operations.
  • Whilst the upgrades to Schades Group’s warehousing system have taken three years to implement, there has been a long-term commitment to maximising the efficiency of Schades Groups’ internal and external processes.

This is widespread practice within the paper rolls and labels industry, but Schades Group have now fully integrated this into our processes and capitalise on the new functionalities that are constantly introduced.

    Newly implemented technology

Within the Schades Group’s warehouses, there have been a number of upgrades to the warehouse management systems.

    These improvements include:

    • Mobile hand scanners
      • Cloud-based, real-time stock tracking, filing, and transport systems
        • Barcode and scanning systems, from receiving to dispatching the goods
        • Benefits and challenges of cloud-based warehousing systems

When using cloud-based systems there are still challenges, including bringing teams up to speed on the processes involved. But the training to use the system has now been completed by all warehouse teams, removing this challenge going forward.

There is now full visibility of our products within the warehouses, with products trackable once they arrive at Schades Group warehouses across Europe.

Our pick and pack teams now also have the exact locations of products within our warehouses. Whilst this is a fantastic step forward in efficient working, if the items are not in the correct location (for example due to temporary relocations) this can create challenges for the teams as they would then need to relocate the items.

However, the real-time tracking and traceability of the system is a huge benefit for Schades Group. We can now fully track the progress of orders and products across the Schades Group warehouses, meaning quality control and stocktaking are a more efficient and smoother process for our teams. It also means that management have a much quicker overview on the stock levels in the warehouses, and turnaround times for orders, meaning stock counts can be completed daily.

          Customer benefits

Whilst presenting challenges internally, the new cloud-based system offers many benefits for our customers, whether they are long-term or short-term contracts.

We can now hand over deliveries of stock to our customers with our software being capable of full integration into our customers own cloud-based services in their warehouse. This works through simple barcode technology, which customers scan on delivery of our products.

Previously, customers lacked the precise information for their packed orders, including the contents of their delivered pallets. Now, we can provide customers with exact content inventories of each pallet in their delivery, which can be done through electronic, secure data transfers. Each pallet also receives its own barcode, making the process much more efficient.

Customers can also further integrate our barcodes into their systems, as we use a GS1 barcode (which is the global standard). Depending on their own warehousing processes, they can scan the barcode of each individual pallet, and their system will tell their warehouse teams exactly where to store the delivery.

What does our internal team think?

Michael Svenstrup – Logistics Manager at Schades Group: “This has been a great infrastructure upgrade for the entire group. We can now offer an enhanced service to our customers, whilst making our internal processes much more efficient. Whilst this is an industry standard practice, we are pleased to have now fully integrated the cloud-based system across our European warehouses!”
